MATERIALSANALYSIS

Recognising every project as unique, the scope, depth and type of our analysis is determined by the composition (original materials, added materials and contaminants) and performance of your building or structure. To ensure comprehensive and meaningful results, Calibre’s conservation team are specialists in:

MORTAR, RENDER AND PLASTER ANALYSIS
Mortar, render and plaster play a significant part in the behaviour and appearance of your building or structure.  Experienced in mortar analysis, we assess and advise upon the constituents and proportions of your mortar, render and plaster.

STONE ANALYSIS
Stone buildings and structures are subject to various environmental and structural stresses. Durability and performance also depend on the physical and chemical properties of the stone. We identify your stone type, assessing and advising upon its physical and chemical characteristics.

SURFACE COATING ANALYSIS
Surface coatings affect the behaviour and appearance of a material. Experienced in identifying surface coatings, Calibre will assess and advise upon the physical and chemical properties of your specific coating.

LEAD PAINT ANALYSIS
Long recognised as harzardous, lead paint was banned from general sale in 1992. Prior to this, however, lead compounds were widely used and if your building pre-dates the 1960s, it is likely to contain dangerous lead paint. Our analysts will identify which paint layers contain lead and provide a quantitive determination of the amount of lead within combined paint layers.

DIAGNOSTIC INVESTIGATION (MOISTURE AND SALTS)
Soluble salts are a principal agent of decay in porous building materials. Calibre’s conservation team uses non-destructive instrumental analysis for mapping relative moisture and salt content. We also provide a qualitative determination of ions and compounds.
